Homemade Thousand Island Dressing

A couple of days ago I posted a recipe for Reuben Sandwiches made with leftover grilled Corned Beef. Oh man, those were tasty with just the right balance between the meat and sauerkraut and homemade Thousand Island.

But, when I made the Reuben sandwiches I didn’t have any Thousand Island dressing which is one of those things that give Reubens their flavor. So I looked it up and came up with several different recipes for it. Some of them even include chopped up hard-boiled eggs but I figured that’s an extra step and expense that I can do without.

Here’s what I came up with. Give it a try.

Recipe: Homemade Thousand Island Dressing

Summary: You don’t have to go out and buy Thousand Island Dressing if you’ve got just a few ingredients handy. It’s tasty, easy and cheap.

Ingredientshomemade thousand island ingredients

  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise or “salad dressing”
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tsp sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tsp white onion finely minced

Instructions

  • Take out a medium size bowl and a homemade thousand islandtablespoon (for this, I use a tablespoon and teaspoon out of the silverware drawer not measuring spoons).
  • Put all the ingredients in the bowl and mix thoroughly with one of the spoons or with a small whisk.

That’s it. It’s that simple and yet it gives you a tasty Thousand Island you can use on sandwiches or salads. If you want to make more, just increase the amount of ingredients you use. Oh, and by the way, we like things a bit “spicy” so I added a coupla-three squirts of hot sauce too.

The Cheap Bastid Test: How much does each ingredient for this cost? I’ve already got all the ingredients—bought and paid at the grocery store—so there’s part of me that says “free” and yet the best “guesstimate” I can make is about $.50 (if that). I would have burned a lot more gas than that plus about $2.50 for a small bottle of Thousand Island the remainder of which would have languished in my fridge for months after the few squirts I would have used to make Reuben sandwiches.

    A classic recipe for Thousand Island dressing! I like to mix half sweet relish and half dill relish to cut down on the sweetness a bit–the dill relish perks up the dressing, in my opinion. Some recipes for Reuben sandwiches cal for mustard instead of Thousand Island dressing, but that’s not the way I eat mine!
